Book talk and signing: Joseph Cornell’s Manual of Marvels

April 11, 2013. 6-8pm.

Book talk and signing with author Analisa Leppanen-Guerra

This is Leppanen-Guerra’s second book on Joseph Cornell, co-edited with Dickran Tashjian, recently released with Thames & Hudson Press.

Joseph Cornell’s Manual of Marvels is based on Cornell’s complex and pioneering book-object Untitled (Journal d’Agriculture Pratique) (c.1930s-40s), a French agricultural yearbook dating from 1911, which Cornell altered through cut-outs, drawings, collaged material, and origami.  This is a significant study, since Cornell’s book-object is most likely the first artist’s book of its kind, and yet is a relatively unknown work.

The project includes a volume of scholarly essays, partial facsimile (with cut-outs and other unique handmade features), and CD-ROM digitally reproducing the pages of the book along with commentary – all packed in a wood-grain box.

Joseph Cornell’s Manual of Marvels has received favorable reviews from the New York Times, the Huffington Post, and the New Republic. More information about the project can be found here.

This event is free and open to the public. A limited number of copies of the book will be available for sale at the signing.
