Sochi in Six Dimensions: A Project in Rich Cartography

Thursday, February 20. 6pm.

William Nickell, University of Chicago professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures, first visited the resort town of Sochi in 1989. Returning 20 years later, he documented the destruction of the old sanatoriums in pursuit of modernization. Nickell’s current project is a digital map of Sochi that will reveal its layers of pre-Soviet, Soviet, and present-day landscape and character.
