Afterimage

September 13 – November 18

/ 2012

An “afterimage” is something that persists in your field of vision even after exposure to it has ceased. Figuratively, afterimage refers to the persistence of the Imagist phenomenon in Chicago and beyond. Literally, the contemporary artists that comprise Afterimage are of a generation after Imagism, and also — in ways both visual and ideological — they have moved through and beyond it.

The national roster of contemporary artists (including several from Canada) work across a range of media, including painting, drawing, animation, sculpture, comics and music. However, they have all either studied with, were influenced by, or share influences with the Imagists. An accompanying exhibition of historic Imagist work drawn from local university art museums traces this teacher/student lineage.

Afterimage thoroughly considers the contemporary implications of the Imagist legacy through a focused exploration of the artwork, writing and events and performance programming of the contemporary makers on view.

Afterimage will also include three satellite exhibitions that foreground other fundamental aspects of the art practices of both the contemporary artists and the Chicago Imagists. These exhibitions will be hosted by the Roger Brown Study Collection, the Center for Book and Paper Arts, and the Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection.

Afterimage is curated by Thea Liberty Nichols and Dahlia Tulett-Gross and organized by the DePaul Art Museum.
