Renee Stout: Readers, Advisors & Storefront Churches

April 4 – May 18

/ 2003

As visibly as any artist working today, Renee Stout explores her own past and present in paintings, installations, and found-object sculptures. Her autobiographical and emotionally charged works are filled with references to her African, American and European heritage, and to events and forces in her life and in the world.

Readers, Advisors, and Storefront Churches is organized in cooperation with the University of Missouri-Kansas City Belger Center for Creative Studies and the John and Maxine Belger Family Foundation. We are grateful for their assistance in bringing this extraordinary exhibition to Chicago. We appreciate as well the support of the Vincentian Endowment Fund, as well as our cosponsors in the DePaul University Women’s Center, the Center for Diaspora Studies, and the Art Department.
